Brow Lift Surgery
One of the most popular items on a plastic surgeon’s menu is brow lift surgery, also known as an eyebrow lift or forehead lift surgery. The procedure smoothes the forehead, reduces frown lines, and raises the eyebrow line.
The doctor makes an incision starting from the top of the ears and moving across the forehead behind the hairline. Then, the forehead muscles are tightened, removing any excess skin and tissue. The forehead skin is raised to elevate the brow line, and the incision is sutured shut. Gauze padding or elastic bandages cover the wound for one to two days thereafter. Brow lift surgery is often performed in an outpatient clinic under local anesthesia and mild sedation.
A less invasive version of the brow lift surgery is an endoscopic brow lift, which leaves less scarring since smaller incisions are made. The surgeon passes an endoscope—a light and small camera on a cable—into the incision and views the tissues on a video monitor. Muscle tissue is then removed from between the brows and the forehead. Finally, the forehead skin is lifted and fastened in place with sutures. The initial incisions are washed carefully and then sutured shut. With both types of surgery, patients usually return to normal activity within a week, although they often have to apply various topical ointments until the area has fully healed. Many doctors also recommend that patients stay out of the sun for several days or weeks.
